MLNA News & Events:

THE MLNA has a beautiful new website!

Dear Members & Friends,

Since April 2007, I've been the Coordinator/Executive Director of the MLNA and I just love every minute of it. I enjoy communicating with all our members plus helping our top-rate board members develop networking events and continuing education curriculum for our industry professionals. And, I enjoy passing on useful information to our consumers across the state through the radio and newspapers. It's a privilege to serve you and our industry.

Improving the use and design of the MLNA website has been my goal since I started. We need a fast and easy system for spreading information to each other and to our customers. With our membership quickly growing, I also want to make sure that each of you have an easy and fast way to make membership and registration payments, tell us about your events and news, connect to each other and stay informed with the latest information you need to know.

Although the website continues to evolve and add more and more features, I wanted to share with you this new look and the new ways we'll be using it.

I'm looking forward to "growing together"

MLNA Species & Pest Alerts:

Update on the Emerald Ash Borer

The MNLA received a direct letter from Collin Wamsley, State Entomologist from the Missouri Department of Agriculture Plant Pest Control Bureau.

Dear Members of the MLNA:

As some of you may already know, the emerald ash borer (EAB) was discovered at an Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) campground 2 miles south of Greenville, Missouri in Wayne County.  The likely pathway of introduction was firewood.  The official determination that it was EAB was made late Friday, July 25 by USDA entomologists in Beltsville, Maryland.  Monday morning we convened our multi-agency Missouri emerald ash borer technical team to determine the next steps.  Since we recently completed our Missouri Emerald Ash Borer Action Plan, we had a framework in place to guide us through this process.  Late Monday afternoon we departed for Wayne County to survey the campground and vicinity, as well as other State Parks and federal campgrounds in the county.  To date, no signs of EAB have been found outside of the ACOE area. Suspect trees have been identified ¾ mile to the northwest of the positive trap, away from the campground, but still on ACOE land. [read more]

MLNA Research & Results

(MLNA has inquiring minds….let us know your topic of interest and we will gather the research & results!)

What is Conservation Development?

Ask developers, a municipal officer, a land planner and an ecologist to define "Conservation Development" and you’re likely to get four very different answers. That’s because, as a concept for developing residential or commercial properties, Conservation Development is relatively new.

But it is rapidly gaining popularity among those who refer to conventional subdivisions as "cookie cutter," and among those who recognize that desires for living space amenities are shifting in the American culture. The Wall Street Journal recently cited a national study of home buyers who ranked "Natural open space," "Walking and bike paths" and "Gardens with native plants" as their top three wishes. Golf courses came in a distant tenth.

So what is Conservation Development? Here’s the ecological viewpoint...

According to AES founder and ecologist Steven Apfelbaum, true Conservation Development can be defined as considering the needs of land first and foremost, and then making developed areas complementary to those needs. For more information  click here.

MLNA Local Expertise Q&A:

Q. What is needed for growing Missouri native plants for developing seed banks and harvesting the seed to sell?  I have some available ground, experience in growing and would like to “grow” in that direction!

A: My suggestion is to contact Missouri’s Grow Native program representatives and to do some research on collection time periods, most requested seed products and best sources for local plant material.

Grow Native is a program that can assists you as a business with sales, marketing and expert advice as to how to reach your target market.  For more information  click here

Greenscape Gardens Brings Sustainability to
Habitat for Humanity 2008

Habitat for Humanity

In the last couple of years, landscape plans with a focus on sustainability has been an increasingly high demand area of interest in the green industry.

This year, a team of designers came together on a special project for Habitat for Humanity St. Louis with the intent of achieving a Gold Level LEED Certification on all 27 of its new builds for 2008.  This team includes engineers, architects, and specialists of all areas of development, including Jennifer Schamber of Greenscape Gardens as the team member for the Landscape Design of the project.

The new landscape designs include a diverse variety of drought-tolerant plants, the majority of which are native to Missouri and suitable for an urban landscape.  These homes were built to be energy-efficient, and the landscape will use less water than a typical landscape.  Plans are already in the works for the 2009 builds with the possibility of installing cisterns, significantly decreasing conventional turfgrass areas and installing compost bins.

This project will help set the standard for the future of homebuilding and will help raise awareness to the public about sustainable building practices for homes and gardens.
